The Assam BJP will not give ticket to any person, who is convicted by court, for the 2021 Assembly elections, state party chief Ranjit Kumar Dass has said.

Dass has said that “his party will not give party candidature to any convicted criminal in the next assembly elections”. In an interview with AajTak and India Today TV, Dass said that his “party is keeping a safe distance from criminals”.

“We are not in favour of giving party candidature to any convicted person. We will give party candidature to persons with clean images. Allegations against a person, and someone convicted are two different things. People have made allegations against many politicians. If anyone is found convicted by the court, then there is no chance for him to get our party ticket. If there are minor allegations against some persons and they are not convicted by the court, then our party will take a decision on it. Because, we can’t give a criminal tag to a person until a court has convicted him or her,” Dass said.

He added that his “party will always prefer a person with ‘clean image’. Claiming that the “BJP is a party of clean image members”, the Assam BJP president said that the “party will form government in Assam again, with a clean image”.

In 2016 Assembly polls in Assam, the BJP had fielded eight candidates with criminal cases, and seven out of them had serious charges. Apart from the BJP, Congress and the AIUDF, too, had fielded 13 candidates each who had criminal cases.
