Vijay Mallya’s France property worth Rs 14 crore attached by ED

Fugitive liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s France property worth 1.6 Million Euros, or Rs 14 crore, has been attached by French authorities on the request of India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED). The property located at 32 Avenue FOCH, France, was identified recently by ED.

“Investigations conducted under PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002) revealed that a large amount was remitted abroad from the bank account of Kingfisher Airlines Ltd. (KAL),” said ED.

ED has initiated an investigation under PMLA based on an FIR registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against Kingfisher Airlines Ltd., Vijay Mallya, and others on January 25, 2016.

So far, properties worth Rs 11,231.70 crore (market value at the time of attachment) of Vijay Mallya have been attached.

An extradition request of Vijay Mallya was sent to the UK, and the Westminster Magistrates’ Court ruled for his extradition on charges of money laundering on December 10, 2018.

In its order, the court had noticed clear evidence of dispersal and misapplication of the loan funds and, prima facie, found that Vijay Mallya was involved in a conspiracy to launder money.

Vijay Mallya’s appeal before the UK High Court and later Supreme Court has been rejected.

Sources say, the Indian government, through authorities, is trying to bring back Vijay Mallya to India from the UK to face the law.

Vijay Mallya had earlier offered the government to take the pending money against him but his request was not accepted.

A Mumbai Court declared Vijay Mallya a fugitive economic offender on January 05, 2019.
