South Africa vs England: Faf du Plessis, Reeza Hendricks rested for ODIs ahead of Test series against Sri Lanka

England tour of South Africa: Faf du Plessis, Reeza Hendricks and 2 other cricketers have been released from the ODI squad for the 3-match series, starting December 4.

England are in South Africa for a white-ball tour and the visitors have already embarked on a winning note with a 3-0 win against the Proteas. Next in line is the 3-match ODI series between the two teams starting on December 4. The hosts have decided to rest former captain Faf du Plessis for the ODIs and have released him the squad.

Although South Africa couldn’t manage even a single win in the T20I series, and got whitewashed for 3-0, Faf du Plessis scored two half-centuries (one unbeaten) in the 3 matches. Before the T20I series, du Plessis spent 2 months in the UAE playing for the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2020.

After the ODIs against England, South Africa will be hosting Sri Lanka for 2 Test matches and the Proteas have decided to give 3 weeks of rest to Faf ahead of the 1st match that will start on Boxing Day (December 26).

Besides Faf, South Africa have also released Reeza Hendricks, Pite van Biljon and Bjorn Fortuin who are supposed to participate in the 4-Day Domestic Series. Meanwhile, ace pacer Kagiso Rabada misses out due to an injury, a right adductor strain, he picked up in the T20I series. Rabada could take about three weeks to recover and expected to be fit for the Sri Lanka Test series.
