Sony might launch a ‘Pro’ version of PlayStation 5 with dual-GPUs and more RAM – Times of India

Sony recently launched its updated gaming console — PlayStation 5 in select regions. While we are still waiting for the console to arrive in other regions including India, a new report has surfaced online suggesting a new more powerful version of the PS5 gaming console likely to be named as PS5 Pro. The Pro version is speculated to be powered by two GPUs instead of the single unit in existing PS5.
According to the report by T3, a patent was filed by the company earlier this year with United States Patent Application 20200242723. The patent application describes the patent as ‘Scalable game console for ‘home console and cloud gaming’ usage.
The patent application mentions that the second GPU unit will be communicatively coupled with the first GPU and both GPUs will be programmed to render different portions of video. For example, the first GPU will be responsible for rendering the first portion of video and the second will render the second, with both portions being different from each other.
Alternatively, the first GPU can also be programmed to render all of some, but not all lines of video, to provide the first line of output, while the second will take charge of rendering the second line of video. The first line and second line can be then combined to render the complete frame.
The patent application refers to the console as a ‘high-end’ version of the console that will offer better performance and storage capacity. Which indicates that the upcoming Pro version of PS5 might offer more storage space and RAM compared to the ongoing model.
There’s no official information on when the company is planning to launch the alleged Pro version of PS5 in the market.
