Riteish Deshmukh to Hansal Mehta, Bollywood celebs voice support for farmers’ protest

After some Punjabi film actors criticised Bollywood for the lack of support for the ongoing farmers’ protest against the three farm laws passed by the central government, many celebrities have come in support of them. From Riteish Deshmukh to Hansal Mehta, the celebrities took to Twitter to voice support to the protest.

Thousands of farmers from Haryana, Punjab and other states have been on protest holding demonstrations for many days at Delhi’s border points. The farmers are protesting against the new farm laws, which they fear will dismantle the minimum support price system, leaving them at the “mercy” of big corporates.

Riteish Deshmukh is among the first Bollywood celebrities who took to Twitter to support the farmers’ protest. He wrote, “If you eat today, thank a farmer. I stand in solidarity with every farmer in our country. #JaiKisaan (sic).”

Director Hansal Mehta tweeted a simple message to show his support for farmers. He wrote, “#IStandWithFarmers.”

Anubhav Sinha, who is quite vocal about his political stands, wrote, “Jo Bole So Nihaal (sic).”

Punjabi actor and director Gippy Grewal criticised Bollywood for not standing up for farmers. He took to Twitter and wrote that he is disappointed that Bollywood celebrities are not supporting Punjab when the state needs their support.

He wrote, “Dear Bollywood, Every now and then your movies have been shot in Punjab & everytime you have been welcomed with open heart. But today when Punjab needs u the most, u didn’t show up and speak a word. #DISAPPOINTED (sic).”

Replying to Gippy Grewal’s tweet, Taapsee Pannu wrote that the Punjabi actor-director should not put everyone under the same umbrella as many Bollywood celebrities, including herself, are supporting the protest. She wrote, “Sir, just because the ones u expected to speak up did not please don’t put us all under the same umbrella. Not that the handful of us need validation regarding standing up but it really pulls down our efforts when disregarded (sic).”

Replying to the actor, Gippy Grewal said his tweet wasn’t for Taapsee Pannu and others who are supporting the farmers, but for those who call themselves Punjabi.

Several Bollywood stars, including Taapsee Pannu, Swara Bhasker, Richa Chadha, Sonu Sood, Hansal Mehta, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Divya Dutta, among others have come out in support of farmers.

Agitating farmers on Friday announced a Bharat Bandh on December 8, hardening their position ahead of the fifth round of talks with the government.
