Qualcomm has introduced its Snapdragon 888 5G mobile chip that will power premium flagship smartphones in 2021. Qualcomm calls this the most advanced mobile chipset and brands like Xiaomi,Oppo, Realme and OnePlus have already confirmed that their next flagship smartphones will be powered by Snapdragon 888 chipset.
Snapdragon 888 is manufactured using 5nm process technology powered by Qualcomm Kryo 680 CPU which is claimed to generate up to a 25% uplift in overall CPU performance and allows top frequencies of up to 2.84GHz. It is also the first commercial CPU subsystem to be based on the Arm Cortex-X1. It is accompanied by a Qualcomm Adreno 660 GPU.
As far as the camera features are concerned, Snapdragon 888 chipset comes with Spectra 580 ISP. It’s a triple Image Signal Processor (ISP), capable of capturing from three cameras simultaneously at breakneck processing speeds—up to 2.7 gigapixels per second.
Smartphones will be able to support 120fps burst snapshots or capture three 4K HDR videos at the same time. New 4K HDR with computational HDR video capture provides dramatic improvements to color, contrast, and detail. The Qualcomm Spectra 580 ISP also debuts a new low light architecture, for brighter photos, even in near darkness. Also included is photo capture in 10-bit color depth in the HEIF format.
Qualcomm claims this to be the most advanced 5G chipset and comes along with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth audio for enhanced mobile experiences. The integrated 3rd generation Snapdragon X60 5G Modem-RF System enables support for 5G sub-6 carrier aggregation. However, smartphone users in India have very little to do with 5G as of now.
The new Snapdragon 888 chipset supports Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 mobile connectivity system, supporting Wi-Fi 6 speeds of any mobile Wi-Fi offering up to 3.6 Gbps as well as new 6 GHz capacity with Wi-Fi 6E. There’s support for Bluetooth 5.2, dual Bluetooth antennas, Qualcomm aptX suite and more.
For AI advancements, the new chipset flaunts a Qualcomm Hexagon 780 processor delivering up to three times performance per watt improvement over the prior generation.
Qualcomm has included several security features which includes a new Type-1 Hypervisor, that provides a new way to secure and isolate data between apps and multiple operating systems on the same device. The company has partnered with Truepic. “This will enable Snapdragon 888 to capture cryptographically-sealed photos that are compliant with the Content Authenticity Initiative standard, an open standard for digital content provenance led by Adobe.”
