Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh is scheduled to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi tomorrow over the issue of farmers’ agitation over the new agricultural laws. CM Amarinder Singh and Amit Shah are expected to meet between 9.30 am and 10 am on Thursday. Captain Amarinder Singh will leave Chandigarh for Delhi at 8 am.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is said to have held two meetings with Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar earlier. Some reports have quoted a couple of farmer leaders as saying that they received a telephone call from Amit Shah expressing the government’s readiness for talks.

On Tuesday, leaders of 35 farmers unions had met Agriculture Minister Narendra Tomar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal for talks at the Vigyan Bhawan today in a bid to bring a resolution to the months-long stir.

Tomar had proposed that the government will set up a five-member committee comprised of officials, agrarian experts as well as farmers’ leaders to look into the three agricultural laws and resolve grievances.

However, the farmers rejected the proposals put forward by the government and said that their protest will continue till the government repeals the newly enacted farm laws.

Thousands of farmers are at Delhi’s borders protesting over the three farm bills passed by Parliament in the last Monsoon Session. They have threatened to block the five main entry routes to Delhi from neighbouring states. The farmers say they are prepared for a long haul in this “decisive battle”. The Narendra Modi government has sent signals that it is willing to help farmers end their agitation before the winter gets harsher and the protest event turns into a super-spreader for Covid-19.
