Jose Mourinho said it’s good fun to spend one more week at the top of the Premier League table as Tottenham Hotspur handed Arsenal a 2-0 thrashing on Sunday. Liverpool, who are tied on 24 points with Spurs, are closing in but Mourinho’s men are looking good after a strong start to the new season.
Goals from Son Heung-min and Harry Kane gave Spurs a 2-0 win over Mike Arteta’s Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on Sunday. Mourinho’s men have gone through a tricky phase early in their campaign without dropping too many points. Tottenham defeated Manchester City and held Chelsea to a 0-0 draw before beating Arsenal to retain the top spot.
Holders Liverpool are looking to climb the table as they came up with a dominant 4-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers but Mourinho is confident of taking it one week at a time.
“We are top of the league for one more week, which is good fun,” Jose Mourinho said.
“I can imagine lots of people can imagine three matches in a row – against Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal – would be a moment for us to drop points and go back to ‘normality’ but we didn’t go back to ‘normality’. We are there.”
Mourinho lauds ‘world-class’ Harry and Sonny
A splendid start for Spurs in the new Premier League campaign can be attributed to some fine displays from their star forward, Son and Kane. The two have combined for 11 goals this season already as Spurs are among the top-scorers in the season so far.
Mourinho had rich words of praise for Son and Kane after the duo netted in their win over Arsenal.
“Harry and Sonny are world-class players and, on the top of what they do, they have a very good sense of the team,” Mourinho said.
“They have a very good sense of the balance that they need and they also do incredible tactical work for the team when the team doesn’t have the ball. So top players, amazing.”
The defeat has added to Arsenal’s problems as Mikel Arteta’s men are currently at the 15th spot with just 4 wins in 11 matches.
