The ruling BJP in Karnataka is firm on bringing a law in the state to ban ‘love Jihad’, however, the state law minister has said no such proposal has been brought before him.

Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday said the state government will bring a law to ban ‘love Jihad’. “The UP government has recently passed an Ordinance. I have instructed officials to source information about that. They will study what other states have done and then a law banning love jihad for sure will be promulgated in Karnataka,” he said.
Bommai also slammed former CM Siddaramaiah’s comments that inter-religious marriages have been happening in the county between Hindus and Muslims from the time of the Mughals. Bommai said Siddaramaiah is still living in the Mughal era.
But Law Minister JC Madhuswamy said there has been no proposal brought before him or his department to ban love jihad. Speaking to reporters in Chikkamagaluru, he said, “No decision has been taken at the government’s level. Being the chairman of the scrutiny committee, no such proposal has come before me. What else should I discuss when we aren’t going to bring any such law?”
Siddaramaiah, the Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka assembly, on Tuesday said the Congress will oppose if the government tries to bring in legislation against ‘love jihad’ and cow slaughter in the state during the coming winter session.
“There are a lot of people who are of mixed heritage (Hindu and Muslim). It is a foolish thing (law to ban love jihad), the constitution does not permit to bring in a law on such a thing as Love Jihad. The law does not permit and there is no provision as well,” he said.
However, R Ashoka, Revenue Minister took on Siddaramaiah saying the LoP is playing politics to appease the minorities. “This is creating tension between religious communities. The Karnataka government will ban Love Jihad at any cost. We will jail all those indulging in Love Jihad. They will be locked up in the Central prison. Who is Siddaramaiah to oppose this? Is he running the government?” he asked. The minister also claimed that the BJP is in power both at the Centre and State and has decided to end this menace.
Even BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel said the government will take strict steps to stop love jihad. “In this government, there will be a law. Not just this, there will also be a law banning cow slaughter as well,” he added.
