  • Sorry Australia: Candice Warner saw the funny side of her husband’s injury

David Warner’s wife Candice on Tuesday said that the Australia opener’s scan results revealed a serious groin strain but sounded confident that the star batsman will be able to recover in time for the much-anticipated Test series against India.

Candice Warner said her husband is ‘quite the professional’ when it comes to recovery and that he will work hard towards getting fit for the Test series.

Candice, who has become a popular social media star along with her husband, cracked a joke on a radio show, saying she had no role to play in Warner’s groin strain. Candice saw the funny side of the incident, saying that people have asked her what she had done to her husband, considering they met after a long gap following Warner’s return from the UAE and the subsequent quarantine period.

Warner has been ruled out of the remainder of the limited-overs series against India after he picked up the groin injury during the 2nd ODI in Sydney on Sunday. Australia head coach Justin Langer said Warner will race against time to get fit for the 1st Test against Australia, starting December 17. However, Candice said Warner has not suffered a tear but it’s only a strain in his groin.

“We only sort of reunited after four months apart, a couple of days prior… and everyone’s like, ‘What have you done to him?’,” Candice said during her appearance on radio show Triple M.

“I’m like, ‘It wasn’t me! It was not me’.”

“Sorry Australia,” she giggled.

“I mean there’s 17 days before the first Test against India, so hopefully he’ll be ready to go. But it is serious, and he is in a lot of pai. He will not want to miss that first test against India.”

D’Arcy Short has been named as a replacement for David Warner in the limited-overs squad and the big-hitting batsman is likely to make the playing XI for the 3rd ODI against India on Wednesday in Canberra.

Warner was in prolific form as he continued from where he left at IPL 2020, scoring back-to-back fifties as Australia sealed a 2-0 unbeatable lead in the 3-match ODI series.
