India’s Peak Power Supply Touches All-Time High

To prepare for an unanticipated increase in demand and consumption of electricity in the nation, the power ministry had instructed all imported coal-based power plants to operate at maximum capacity from 16 March 2023 to 15 June 2023

As per available government data, India’s peak power supply of electricity touched an all-time high of 223.23 GW on 9 June, due to unseasonal rains on consumption.

According to reports, the Union power ministry has predicted that during the summer in April, the peak power consumption would reach 229 GW.

To prepare for an unanticipated increase in demand and consumption of electricity in the nation, the power ministry had instructed all imported coal-based power plants to operate at maximum capacity from 16 March 2023 to 15 June 2023.

To prevent any shortage of the dry fuel, the ministry has urged the domestic coal-based thermal power plants to import coal for blending.

According to official data, the peak electricity demand fulfilled this year was 215.97 GW in April and 221.34 GW in May. In April, there was only a 170 MW deficiency, and in May, 23 MW. The experts claimed that the small shortage may have been brought on by technical issues.

This year’s power consumption decreased in March and was essentially flat in April. It fell once more in May, illustrating how the nation was affected by the unusually heavy rainfall.

Power usage once more decreased, falling to 134.20 BU in May 2023 from 135.15 BU in the same month the previous year. According to experts, June’s rainy weather may keep growth in power use at a minimum.
