India To Be Biggest Semiconductor Manufacturer Globally: Ashwini Vaishnaw

India will be the biggest semiconductor manufacturer globally in the coming five years, said Minister of Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw addressing an Industry event on Saturday.

The minister emphasised the Centre’s USD 10 billion semiconductor manufacturing plan with a fabrication plant expected to be approved soon, “Our focus is to build the right ecosystem “, Vaishnaw said.

There are some challenges to be addressed to sustain semiconductor manufacturing in India, he added, stressing the statement, the process is complex and needs 250-odd very special chemicals and gases, and a reliable power supply.

Vaishnaw underlined that a voltage fluctuation for even three seconds can impact the whole day’s production and ultra-pure water that has to be manufactured.

He said, when creating a new industry, people have a tendency to wait and watch, which is a natural process.

Semiconductor chips are electronic devices meant to store and process information. The small chip is capable of containing billions of microscopic switches.
