Former Australia captain Mark Taylor said that the concussion substitute rule is for the protection of players and needs to be used fairly and responsibly. Taylor has warned players not to abuse the concussion substitute rule,

Yuzvendra Chahal was named as concussion substitute for Ravindra Jadeja after the all-rounder took a blow to the head in the final over of the Indian innings. Chahal bagged 3 wickets and picked up the Player of the Match award as India beat Australia by 13 runs after successfully defending 161 in 20 overs.

India captain Virat Kohli later revealed that Jadeja showed signs of a delayed concussion and therefore, couldn’t take the field during Australia’s run chase.

“The concussion rules are there to protect players,” Mark Taylor, a former member of the ICC Cricket Committee, was quoted as saying by Sydney Morning Herald.

“If they are abused there’s a chance it will go like the runner’s rule. The reason the runners were outlawed was that it started to be abused. It’s up to the players to make sure they use the concussion sub fairly and responsibly.

“I’m not suggesting that didn’t happen last night.”

After the decision, Australia head coach Justin Langer was seen having an animated conversation with match referee David Boon on the sidelines but it was not known whether it had anything to with Chahal being allowed as a concussion substitute.

Hours after the game the BCCI announced that Jadeja will miss the remaining two T20Is due to the concussion and named fast bowler Shardul Thakur as his replacement in the squad.
