Huge cache of arms, ammunition recovered in Assam’s Kokrajhar ahead of BTC election


Ahead of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, security forces on Saturday recovered huge cache of illegal arms including AK series rifles in Assam’s Kokrajhar district.

The arms were recovered from the jungle area of Ripu reserve forest under Gossaigaon police station in Kokrajhar district on Saturday.

Based on intelligence input, Kokrajhar district police, CRPF, 31st battalion of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Indian Army had jointly launched an operation in the jungle areas of Ripu reserve forest, about 300 meters away from Sundari Nala under Soraibil border outpost on Friday evening.

During operation, the security forces had recovered huge cache of arms, ammunition, explosives which were kept concealed underground in thick forest area.

Security forces recovered four AK-56 rifles with magazines, six muzzle-loaded pipe guns, seven 7.65 mm pistols, 26 numbers of 7.65 mm pistol magazines, three desi cartoz pistols, 44 rounds of 7.65 mm live ammunition, four rounds of 8 mm live ammunition, 15 rounds of 9 mm live ammunition, 08 rounds of 7.62 mm live ammunition, one rounds of 7.62 mm country made ammunition, six rounds of 5.56 mm live ammunition (insas), 27 rounds of 7.62 mm empty cases (SLR), 13 rounds of 7.62 mm empty cases (SK), six rounds of 5.56 mm empty cases (insas), 50 rounds of homemade empty cartoz, 19 rounds of 9 mm empty cases, 30 numbers of iron balls, two 36 HC grenades, one Chinese hand grenade, two handmade grenades, three bottle bombs (country-made) from the area.

Kokrajhar district Superintendent of Police (SP) Rakesh Roushan said that, based on secret information police, SSB, CRPF and Indian Army had jointly launched an operation in the jungle area in Ripu reserve forest.

“We had recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition during the operation,” Rakesh Roushan said.

Kokrajhar district is under Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) and the BTC elections will be held on December 7 and 10 in two phases.
