Farmers who commit suicide are cowards, said Karnataka agriculture minister BC Patil while addressing farmers at Ponnampet in Kodagu district.

“Farmers who commit suicide are cowards. Only a coward who can’t take care of his wife and children commits suicide. When we have fallen in the water, we have to swim and win,” BC Patil said.

The comment came even as the Centre held talks with farmers’ leaders in Delhi on Thursday to break the deadlock over the three recent farm laws that have sparked India’s biggest farm protests in years.

BC Patil began with an example of a woman who was wearing gold bangles. “She said Mother Earth had given her the bangles for her 35 years of toil. Doesn’t this please you? The woman’s trust in the land is the right response to all those farmers who commit suicide,” he said.

“The farmers who commit suicide are cowards. Only a coward who can’t take care of his wife and children commits suicide. When we have fallen in the water, we have to swim and win,” BC Patil then said, adding that no farmer should take this step and the woman should be taken as an example in their lives.

The minister later defended what he said. “Farmers should not commit suicide. Those who do are cowards. Farmers should never do this,” he said.
