Fact Check: Old image from Jat agitation revived as ongoing farmers’ protest 


An old image from Jat agitation is now being shared by social media users as ongoing farmers’ protest.

Picture being shared by social media users shows a woman driving a tractor full of protesters for the farmers’ agitation near Delhi.

A picture of a woman driving a tractor with the Tricolour fluttering in front and a number of people seated behind is circulating on social media with the claim that the group is on its way to join the farmers’ protest at the Delhi border.

The caption along with the image says, “A contingent from Haryana, with tractor driven by a woman, from yesterday’s march to Tikri Border. Source: Twitter #FarmersProtest #DelhiChalo”.

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) has found that this is a 2017 image of Jat women in Haryana reaching a dharna site during an agitation for reservation.

AFWA probe

Using reverse image search, we found that the picture was taken during the Jat agitation in Haryana almost four years back. The picture was carried in a report by “Hindustan Times”, dated February 6, 2017.

The caption of the image reads, “Jat women protesters on way to Jassia village during their agitation for reservation in Rohtak.” According to the report, the Jat community was demanding quota in government jobs and education.

The same picture was also carried by “Outlook”.

It is true that many women have joined their male counterparts at the ongoing farmers’ agitation near Delhi against the new farm laws. But the viral picture is almost four years old and it shows Jat reservation protesters in Haryana.
