England batsman Dawid Malan set a new record when he became the first player to go past the 900-mark in T20I ratings. Malan is ranked No.1 in the latest ICC T20I Batsman Rankings as his heroics in the 3-match T20i series in South Africa helped England take the top spot in the team rankings.
Malan, 33, has reached 915 points, the first player to cross the 900-point mark in the format. Australia’s Aaron Finch posted exactly 900 points in July 2018. He is on top of the charts with 34 rating points more than 2nd-placed Babar Azam of Pakistan.
Malan hit a match-winning 99 not out in the 3rd and final T20I against South Africa in Cape Town on Tuesday and took his run tally to 173 as Engand clinched a 3-0 cleansweep.
Australia captain Aaron Finch is at the 3rd spot with 835 points and he will be key to their chances in the upcoming 3-match T20I series against India at home in the absence of David Warner.
India’s KL Rahul is at the 4th spot with 824 points while Virat Kohli has retained the 9th spot on the T20I batsman rankings.
England displaced Australia from the top of the ICC T20I team rankings despite both teams being tied on 275 rating points. Virat Kohli’s India will head into Australia T20Is as the 3rd-ranked team.
Former England captain Nasser Hussain praised Malan for his versatile style and consistency.
“On difficult pitches he grinds out a score while when you need to up the run rate and you can’t be using up deliveries on dot balls in the powerplay he doesn’t – he just goes out and smashes it,” Hussain told Sky Sports.
“He never overhits. It’s classy batting – it is not power, it is just timing. At times he makes it look effortless.”
