Richie Mehta-directed Delhi Crime created history by winning an International Emmy for the Best Drama Series. Based on the horrific 2012 Delhi gang rape, Delhi Crime showcases the detailed police investigation. The web series starring Shefali Shah, Rajesh Tailang, Rasika Dugal and Adil Hussain had garnered appreciation from all corners when it released last year. With Delhi Crime’s win at the Emmys recently, the celebration for the team has once again begun. Rajesh Tailang, who plays the role of Inspector Bhupender Singh in Delhi Crime, made a surprising revelation which is sure to get fans of the series excited.
In an exclusive interview to IndiaToday.in, Rajesh Tailang talked about how he feels about Delhi Crime’s win at the Emmys and also revealed that the second season of Delhi Crime is in the making.
It’s almost a week since the Emmys win, are things looking a little different for you?
Definitely; it’s really exciting, I have been getting continuous phone calls. It’s a great feeling. But I think it’s not just a great feeling for me or us as a team of Delhi Crime, but it’s a great feeling for all of us as a nation. It is a big win for the Indian film industry and for India.
Since you belong to Delhi yourself, did you have any emotional connect to the incident?
Kiska nahi tha, we all were agitated and enraged after the incident. I am basically from Rajasthan but I have spent almost 30 years in Delhi. Delhi is like my city; bachpan se reh raha hoon main yahaan. Not just India, but globally the outrage was palpable. But as residents of Delhi we were very angry as well as ashamed as to what happened in our own city. At the time when the incident happened, I was in Delhi.
While shooting for Delhi Crime, was there any particular scene/shot which brought back the memories of that 2012 night?
While I was shooting Delhi Crime, it was a different aspect. Because Delhi Crime was not about the crime but it was about the reaction to the crime and how Delhi Police dealt with it and how they did a great job. It was also about the lives of the people behind the case. So, that was a different aspect that none of us knew earlier. When the crime happened, that time we were only talking about the incident (the victim) and also the image we had about the police was very negative. But when I was part of the series, I came to know a different side of the story. The series helped me understand how the cops did a fantastic job in handling a situation which was totally against them.
For you as an actor, how have OTT platforms changed your career trajectory?
OTT platforms have had a definite effect in my career and has been great for me and actors like me. And not just actors, I think every person who is involved in the making of OTT platform content, be it actors, directors, writers, cameramen; it has opened new opportunities for everyone. It is not just for an actor but the platform is for everyone.
Coming to Mirzapur, when is the shooting going to start? What is in store for the viewers in Mirzapur Season 3?
We know nothing about the upcoming season of Mirzapur. Seriously, I have no idea about the storyline or when we are going to start shooting for the series.
What are some other projects you are currently working on?
I have an upcoming film which is titled Pagglait, and we are also working on Delhi Crime Season 2. I can’t divulge much on this now, but I can tell you the Season 2 of Delhi Crime is in the making.
Due to the lockdown, a lot of my projects were stalled but I have begun shooting on a few projects and am completing patchwork for them. Pagglait is an interesting film which will feature Sanya Malhotra and Ashutosh Rana. The film will release soon.
