Chennai Air Customs seizes gold worth Rs over 14 lakh hidden under medical bandage, jeans

Air Customs officials in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Sunday recovered and seized a total of 147 grams of gold worth Rs 7.5 lakhs and arrested one man in connection with theft.

The accused was identified as Ahamed Anas, 27, who hails from Ramanathapuram.

According to sources, the accused had arrived from Dubai by Air India Express IX 1644 and was intercepted at the exit gate by an alert customs officer who noticed an abnormal bulge on his upper back.

After further search, a big medical bandage was found stuck on his upper back.

On pulling the bandage, two gold packets weighing 168 grams were recovered which were found to be stuck to the inside of the bandage.

On extraction, 147 grams of 24k carat gold valued at Rs 7.5 lakhs was recovered and seized under the Customs Act.

Earlier on Saturday, two passengers named Jumma Khan, 47 and Mohamed Rafi, 46, both of them from Chennai arrived from Dubai by Air India AI 906 and were intercepted at the exit.

After a search, four packets of gold paste in plastic pouches weighing 176 grams, was found to be ingeniously stitched to the bottom portion of their jeans.

On extraction, 142 grams of 24k carat gold valued at Rs. 7.23 lakhs was recovered and seized under the Customs Act.
