  • Shardul picked up the crucial wicket of Steve Smith early in India’s 13-run win
  • I don’t think about whether I am getting one match or I am coming in as an injury replacement: Shardul

India fast bowler Shardul Thakur said he is not worried about selection but is keen on doing well for Team India whenever he gets an opportunity. Shardul’s comments came after a match-winning performance of 3/51 against Australia in the 3rd and final ODI of the 3-match series at the Manuka Oval in Canberra.

Despite having a decent Indian Premier League, Shardul Thakur was not picked for the first 2 matches and was roped in as a replacement for Navdeep Saini, who was dropped for the 3rd ODI. Thakur made an immediate impact as he got the big wicket of Steve Smith for 7, stopping the Australia star from hitting 3 successive hundreds in the ODI series.

Thakur also picked up the wickets of Moises Henriques and Sean Abbot as he finished with figures of 3/51 in his 10-over spell in Canberra. India limited Australia to 289 for 9 as they clinched a 13-run win after Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya’s record stand helped them post 302.

“Selection is not in my hands. But what is more important is I should be able to get games and be in a position to help Team India win matches. My mindset also remains that way — I try to win matches. I don’t think about whether I am getting one match or I am coming in as an injury replacement. The moment you get on the ground, every player only thinks about winning,” Shardul Thakur told the press on Wednesday.

Shardul Thakur has featured in only 4 of the 9 ODIs played by India in 2020. He got a consistent run in New Zealand but was picked for only 1 ODI in the home series against Australia.

Shardul on getting the prized scalp of Steve Smith

India came up with an improved bowling performance in Canberra after leaking 374 and 389 in the first 2 ODIs. Debutant T Natarajan got the big wicket of Marnus Labuschagne in the 7th over as India struck in the powerplay for the first time. Jasprit Bumrah stopped Glenn Maxwell carnage in the 45th over when the all-rounder was looking to lead Australia to a 3-0 sweep.

However, the most important strike was Thakur’s wicket of Smith. Talking about the dismissal, the Mumbai pacer said: “I feel sometimes we get lucky. When Steve Smith was batting, we had planned to bowl at the stumps, and he just edged it down the leg side. So that was kind of lucky that way but yeah I would appreciate that wicket. He’s a top player and to get him early in the innings while defending 302 I think it was a huge wicket,” Thakur said.
