Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij, who tested positive for coronavirus on Saturday, said before being given the first dose in the phase 3 trial of Bharat Biotech’s coronavirus vaccine, he was told by the doctors that antibodies in the human body build up 14 days after getting the second dose. In a tweet, Anil Vij, who is admitted in Civil Hospital Ambala Cantt, said he had received only the first dose of the two-shot coronavirus vaccine by Bharat Biotech.
Anil Vij tested positive for the Covid-19 infection fortnight after getting the first trial dose of Bharat Biotech’s coronavirus vaccine candidate. Anil Vij, 67, had offered to be the first volunteer in the phase three trial for Covaxin, an indigenous potential coronavirus vaccine being developed by Bharat Biotech against Covid-19 in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
Anil Vij was administered the dose on November 20 at the Civil Hospital in Ambala Cantonment. As Anil Vij tested positive for coronavirus, many raised questions and concerns over the efficacy of the coronavirus vaccine that the Haryana health minister was administered in phase 3 trials.
While the Bharat Biotech and the Union health ministry issued clarifications on the concerns over the efficacy of Bharat Biotech’s coronavirus vaccine, Anil Vij, too, took to Twitter to clarify that he was informed that the effectiveness of the coronavirus vaccine would be determined only after a specific number of days pass after the second dose of the vaccine is taken.
In a tweet, Anil Vij said, “Mujhe Covaxin [coronavirus vaccine] lagane se pehle doctors ne bata diya tha ki vaccine ki doosri dose 28 din ke lagne ke 14 din baad hi antibodies banegi. Poori ehtiyaat baratne ke baad bhi main corona ke kaabu mein aa gaya [doctors had told me that the antibodies build up only after 14 days of getting the 2nd dose and I have only received the 1st dose of the coronavirus vaccine. The infection got me even after taking full precautions]”

Anil Vij added that he is admitted to a civil hospital and is feeling fine.
After Anil Vij tested positive for coronavirus, Bharat Biotech took to Twitter to allay any concerns over the efficacy of the vaccine, saying clinical trials are based on a two-dose schedule, given 28 days apart. The vaccine efficacy will be determined two weeks after the second dose, it said.
“Covaxin has been designed to be protective 2 weeks after volunteers receive the 2nd dose. The phase 3 trial is a double-blind study where volunteers have a 50 per cent chance of receiving either vaccine or placebo,” the Hyderabad-based vaccine maker said.
