AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) on Friday at SemiconIndia 2023 revealed its plan to invest approximately USD 400 million over the next five years to bolster its research, development, and engineering operations in India.
The strategic move will pave the way for the creation of the largest AMD design centre in the country and the addition of approximately 3,000 new engineering roles by 2028.
The cornerstone of this expansion lies in the establishment of a state-of-the-art AMD campus in Bangalore, Karnataka, which is set to become the company’s largest design centre. The new campus, slated to open before the end of 2023, will feature cutting-edge facilities, extensive lab space, and collaborative tools designed to foster teamwork and innovation.
The investment decision was met with praise and support from the Government of India, who lauded AMD’s commitment to growth in the country’s semiconductor industry. Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Cabinet Minister for Railways, Telecommunications, Electronics, and Information Technology, welcomed the move, expressing his approval of AMD’s plan to expand its leading-edge R&D engineering operations in India.
“I welcome AMD’s decision to set up its largest R&D design center in India and expansion of the India-AMD partnership. It will certainly play an important role in building a world class semiconductor design and innovation ecosystem. It will also provide tremendous opportunities for our large pool of highly skilled semiconductor engineers and researchers and will catalyse PM Narendra Modi’s vision of India becoming a global talent hub,” said Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
AMD has been an active part of the semiconductor ecosystem in India since 2001 when the company’s first site was established in New Delhi. The new 5,00,000-square-foot Bangalore campus will increase the AMD office footprint to 10 total locations across Bangalore, Delhi, Gurgaon, Hyderabad and Mumbai.
In a statement, Mark Papermaster, executive vice president and chief technology officer, AMD said, “From a handful of employees in 2001 to more than 6,500 employees today, AMD has grown its India footprint based on the strong foundation established by our local leadership and the highly skilled talent pool.”
