3 rhinos found dead in Assam’s Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary within a week


Three one-horned rhinos including two calves were found dead within a week at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam’s Morigaon district.

Three one-horned rhinos including two calves were found dead within a week at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam’s Morigaon district.

A female rhino was found dead inside the wildlife sanctuary on Saturday. The carcass of the female rhino was recovered near Tuplung camp area inside the sanctuary.

Earlier in this week, two rhino calves were found dead inside Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary.

The authorities had conducted post-mortem of the female rhino, but they maintained silence.

Nripen Nath, a local resident of Mayong area near the wildlife sanctuary said it was “very unfortunate” that the three rhinos were found dead inside Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary within a week. He also urged the state forest department to disclose the actual reason of the death of the rhinos.

“We are living in the nearby village of the wildlife sanctuary and our love affection for Pobitora. We request the forest department and the authorities to disclose the actual reason. We don’t know the exact reason. It is our duty to protect the animals. So, we request the authorities to disclose the reason,” Nripen Nath said.

In this year’s flood, one rhino drowned in flood waters in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary which covers 38.81 sq km of areas is known as the place of highest density of rhinos with over 100 rhinos.
