HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kohli has said how Chahal stepped in as substitute and performed under no pressure
  • Chahal was named Man of the Match for his 3/25 in India’s 11-run win
  • India have taken a 1-0 lead in the 3-match T20I series against Australia

India started as favourites in the T20I series, after their win in the 3rd ODI at the same venue, and met the expectations of fans as they won the 1st match by 11 runs. Virat Kohli’s Team India have turned things around in the T20I series with 1-0 lead in the 3-match contest.

The day, however, started with a big discussion over Yuzvendra Chahal’s shocking omission from the original playing XI. But as fate would have it, Chahal played in the 1st T20I but as Ravindra Jadeja’s concussion substitute. India captain Virat Kohli explained that there was no pressure on Chahal coming in as a substitute but he delivered well and is thrilled the way things worked out for India.

1st T20I: Match Report | Match Highlights

“There were no plans of having Yuzi in the game. Jaddu got a knock on the side of the head and was a bit dizzy and still is. Concussion replacements are a strange thing, today it worked for us maybe another time he wouldn’t have found a like-for-like. Yuzi came in and bowled really well, there was no pressure on him when he came in, he just had to bowl his overs. But Yuzi showed character to squeeze the opponents and the pitch offered him enough,” Virat Kohli said at the post-match presentation.

It was the fall of Australia 4th wicket on the last ball of the 15th over, bowled by T Natarajan, after which Indian bowlers ruled the death overs and registered a convincing win over the hosts.

“I thought they had a great start. They were cruising. We showed character to fight back. That is T20 cricket for you. In Australia, you need to play hard and show intensity till the end. He batted beautifully in the last game. Natarajan looks like he can improve a lot. Chahar bowled well as well. Chahal got us back in the game. Hardik’s catch was a game-changer as well.”
