According to local media, a 18-year-old Russian has frozen to death inside his car in the notoriously cold Yakutia region, after getting lost while driving in extreme temperatures. The youth was found dead after a week-long search. His friend has, however, survived the cold.

The two teenagers had started driving from Yakutsk to Magadan — their hometown — on November 28, 2020. The only road between these cities is the Kolyma Highway, most commonly known as the ‘Road of Bones’. The route was built using forced Gulag labour, and hundreds of thousands of prisoners died during the construction work, according to sources.

As there is only one route between these cities, it is unclear how the two youths turned away from the main route and got lost. They were located inside their vehicle, an old Toyota Chaser, around 120 kilometres away from the nearest settlement on Saturday (December 5).
